PITTSBURGH -- Point Park University men's golf is currently mentioned in the NAIA national rankings for the first time since 1969 and has also learned its pairing and tee times for the NAIA Men's Golf National Championship with the announcement of the national qualifiers last week.

Point Park University is in the 'others receiving votes' section of the NAIA Men's Golf Top 25 Poll released by the NAIA office on Thursday (May 2). The Pioneers are rated No. 35 overall, and it is the first time that they are mentioned in the national rankings since finishing third at the NAIA national tournament in 1969.

The national office also officially announced on Thursday the 29 teams and 11 individual qualifiers that will make up the 156-player field at the NAIA Men's Golf National Championship May 13-16 in Daytona Beach, Fla. The Pioneers already knew they were in because of their KIAC Tournament championship April 22-23 in Richmond, Ky. It is the second straight year that Point Park has qualified for nationals as KIAC champs.

Point Park missed the cut and finished 22nd of 30 teams last year at the NAIA national tournament, but that did not warrant a mention in the final NAIA Men's Golf Top 25 Poll. But after winning three of their four spring tournaments this year, including their second KIAC Tournament in a row, the Pioneers are now mentioned among the top teams in the country.

Point Park has three of five players returning from the national tournament competitors in 2013. Those are seniors Chris Bowen (Bethel Park, Pa.) and James Daley (Youngstown, Ohio) as well as junior Collin Holmes (Avon Lake, Ohio). Senior Steve Veydt (Cecil, Pa.) and junior-college transfer Eric Poplowski (Economy, Pa.,), a junior, make up the top five for the Pioneers this year.

The only other time that Point Park men's golf was in the national rankings was in 1969 when it finished third in the NAIA national tournament in Ft. Worth, Texas. But men's golf was discontinued at the school in 1972, and Point Park did not sponsor men's golf again until 2009.

Now in its fifth year since being reinstated at Point Park, the men's golf team is looking to make some noise at the national tournament. The program has won three straight conference tournament titles although the 2011 American Mideast Conference title did not include enough participating teams to warrant an NAIA automatic bid.

Also announced by the NAIA last week were the tee times and pairings for the first two rounds of the NAIA National Championship, which will feature 72 holes at LPGA International in Daytona Beach, Fla., May 13-16.

Point Park will be paired with two other teams for the first 36 holes -- No. 2-ranked William Woods (Mo.) and British Columbia. That grouping will begin play in the first round May 13 at 8:20 a.m. starting on hole No. 1. That grouping will begin its second round May 14 at 12:50 p.m. from hole No. 10.

After 36 holes, the teams will be re-grouped according to the leaderboard with the leaders going off last. The field will be cut after 54 holes with only the top teams playing the final round. Point Park did not make it to the final round in 2013.
