CLARION, Pa. -- The Point Park University men's golf team took home eighth place of 11 teams at the NCAA Division II Hal Hansen Invitational hosted by Clarion University Sunday and Monday at Clarion Oaks Golf Club.

The Pioneers and sixth-place Carnegie Mellon University were the only non-NCAA Division II school in attendance and carded team scores of 308 and 306 for a two-day total of 614. Gannon University (299-291--590) was the team champion followed by Mercyhurst (294-298--592) and California (Pa.) (297-303--600).

Finishing just ahead of Point Park (614) on a crowded leaderboard were Clarion (600), West Chester (606), Carnegie Mellon (607) and Millersville (611).  Point Park came in ahead of Shepherd (629), Pitt-Johnstown and Glenville State (665).

Point Park had a couple of high individual placements with seniors Eric Poplowski and Diego Ortiz tying for 11th place with a two-day total of 150. Poplowski, one of two starters returning from last year's KIAC championship team, shot two rounds of 75. Ortiz, a transfer from NCAA DII Brevard (N.C.), opened with a 78 and followed with the Pioneers' low round of the tournament, a 72 on Monday.

Ben Kennedy, a senior from Sewickley, Pa., shot 77-80--157 to place 37th. Newcomers Noah Zamagias (78-82--160) and Max Kaminsky (82-79--161) placed tied for 45th and tied for 49th in the field of 65 players, respectively. Zamagias is a transfer from Robert Morris, and Kaminsky is a former WPIAL champion at Serra Catholic High School.

Point Park was playing shorthanded with senior Collin Holmes, its most experienced player, out with a hand injury suffered recently. Holmes is the only player left on the team to play in the Pioneers' back-to-back conference championships and NAIA national tournament appearances.

Point Park will next be in action Sept. 14-15 at the Allegheny College Invitational at The Country Club of Meadville.
