Point Park is competing in the NAIA national tournament for the fourth time in its history and its third time in a row. The Pioneers have two of five players returing from last year's team, which like the 2013 squad, failed to make the cut. Point Park competed at the NAIA national tournament one other time when it finished fourth overall in 1969.
This year's team is back at LPGA International in Daytona Beach for the second year in a row. The 2013 national tournament was held in Salem, Ore. With four seniors in its starting five -- two of which have played at nationals -- the Pioneers look to make their mark at NAIAs, the first step of which is making the cut.
Point Park seniors Collin Holmes and Eric Poplowski return with national-tournament experience. Senior Ben Kennedy is in the starting lineup for the first time in his career year. Also new to this year's squad are Diego Ortiz, a senior transfer from Brevard College, and Max Kaminsky, a freshman.
Point Park owns a scoring average of 312.5, but their last six rounds have all been under 308. That includes a KIAC Tournament scorecard of 305-302-308. Newcomers Ortiz and Kaminsky led the Pioneers at the KIAC Tournament finishing in second and third place, respectively to earn All-KIAC honors. Also earning all-conference accolades were Holmes and Poplowski, who tied for sixth.
At the 2014 NAIA national tournament, Point Park posted a strong showing of 296 in the second round and 311 in the third round. The Pioneers missed the cut due mainly to a team score of 321 in the first round.
In 2013, Point Park carded rounds of 309-310-316 at the NAIA national tournament held in Salem, Ore. In its only other national appearance, Point Park placed fourth nationally at the 1969 NAIA Tournament with rounds of 306-312-306-305 at Fort Worth, Texas.
