BELLE VERNON, Pa. -- Point Park University men's golf turned in the third-best round of the day on Saturday in the final round of the Cal U Vulcan Invitational at Cedarbrook Golf Course and as a result made a big climb in the leaderboard to finish seventh of 13 teams.
Point Park shot a team score of 316 in the final round, which was bested by only two schools on the day and was the sixth-best round by any team in the two-day event. The Pioneers put together a big rally from Friday's first-round that saw them shoot 335 for last place of 13 teams after 18 holes.
But by knocking 19 strokes off their scorecard, the Pioneers passed six teams on the final day for a respectable finish in the NCAA Division II event. Eleven of the 13 teams were from Division II. Friday was the first competitive round of the spring season for Point Park, which had its scheduled opener last week at Malone (Ohio) cancelled due to weather.
Senior Eric Poplowski tied for 18th place to lead the Pioneers. He shot rounds of 81 and 78 for two-day total of 159. Leading the 19-stroke, team improvement on Saturday was freshman Max Kaminsky, who shot a 75. It was the best round of the tournament by any Point Park player, and it was 11 shots better than his first 18 holes.
Collin Holmes was tied for 38th with rounds of 84-80. Diego Ortiz (84-83) and Ben Kennedy (87-90) also competed for Point Park. Playing as individuals were Alex Reynolds (82-92) and Michael Popovec (86-83).
Scores were higher across the board with aeration of the greens in place. The tournament scoring average on Friday was 81.55 on Friday and got worse on Saturday by almost a stroke per player at 82.40.
Point Park's next competition is April 11-12 at the Edward Jones Shootout hosted by Carnegie Mellon at The Links at Spring Church. Tee times are 10 a.m. on April 11 and 8 a.m. on April 12.
