Point Park wins Grove City Invitational, Daley edges Elder for medalist
Oct. 11, 2010
GROVE CITY, Pa. – The Point Park University men’s golf team won the team title at the Grove City Invitational Monday at Grove City Country Club, and the Pioneers had the top two individual finishers, as well.
Freshman James Daley and sophomore Austin Elder each shot a 1-under 71 to lead the field, but it was Daley who was deemed the individual champion and Elder took second place after going to the tiebreaker.

Daley (pictured), a native of Youngstown, Ohio, got a par on the No. 1 handicap hole, the par-4 second, and Elder bogeyed that hole to provide the difference.
Daley and Elder were the only players to shoot under par on the par-72 layout, and the Point Park duo was five shots clear of the rest of the field.
Point Park carded a team total of 297 to claim its second tournament championship this fall. Point Park won by 11 shots over host Grove City, which was second at 308. The Pioneers won the La Roche Invitational two weeks ago, and it was Daley who was the medalist in that event, one spot ahead of Elder.
Monday’s event continued a stretch of tough luck for Elder, from Warren, Ohio. Over the weekend, he posted back-to-back 69s at the two-day Mercyhurst Invitational, but the 6-under-par effort was one shot shy of medalist Derek Baker of IUP, who shot 68-69 for 7-under par. Third place in that event was 1-under.
Elder has finished second in his last four tournaments, a stretch that began at La Roche.
Freshman Chris Bowen (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) shot 77, and junior Alex Bernardini (Cuernavaca Morelos, Mexico/USC-Aiken) shot 78 to help Point Park to the winning score of 297. Chris Cichra (Mt. Lebanon/Mt. Lebanon) shot 80.
Point Park’s B Team was also in the field, and that squad recorded a team score of 347. Everyone who competed for the B Team turned in a career-low score Monday. Point Park’s B Team shot 41 strokes better than Point Park’s A Team did at the same event last fall.
Freshman Michael Caris (Van Buren, Ohio/Van Buren) led the way with an 82, and junior Nick Wukich (Sewickley, Pa./Quaker Valley) was not too far behind with an 83.
Senior Nick Fearby (Medina, N.Y./Medina) shot an 88, and fellow senior Josh Frketic (East McKeesport/East Allegheny) carded a 94. Sophomore Jeff Gurski (Flemington, N.J./Hunterdon Central) shot a 100 in the first event of his Point Park career.
Monday’s event ended the fall schedule for Point Park. The Pioneers will resume tournament play in the spring, which is the official golf season. Check the golf website in the future for spring schedule.
