PITTSBURGH – Point Park University men’s golf coach Gabe Bubon announced this week that Michael Caris has signed with the Pioneers, and the Van Buren, Ohio, native will be a freshman in the fall.
Caris, is a four-year member of the Van Buren High School golf team, and his scoring average is 40.2. The two-time all-conference performer stands 6-foot-4, and he is an honorable-mention Northwest Ohio Division III selection.

“Michael has a huge upside, and he is a very talented player,” said Bubon, a native of Warren, Ohio. “He’s a great kid and he comes from a great family. Michael is a solid student-athlete who will help our program continue to progress in the future.”
The Point Park men’s golf team was reinstated during the summer of 2009, and Bubon was named the head coach at that time. Before this year, the Pioneers did not compete in men’s golf since the early 1970s.
A highlight of Caris’ senior season was taking medalist honors at the Division III sectional tournament. Although he qualified for the state tourney, an illness kept him from competing.
This summer he will compete in a qualifier for the U.S. Amateur. To be eligible to compete in that qualifier, players must be nominated by the golf professional at their home course and have a USGA handicap index that meets the minimum requirements. Caris plays out of Findlay Country Club.
