Elder's third-place finish leads Point Park at LaRoche Fall Invitational
Sept. 29. 2009
ALLISON PARK, Pa. - Austin Elder placed third individually at the LaRoche Fall Invitational Tuesday to lead the Point Park University men's golf team to a fifth-place finish out of eight teams.
Elder (pictured left), a freshman from Warren, Ohio, finished two shots back of the medalist with a 77 on a day in which cold, windy and rainy conditions contributed to higher scores at Wildwood Golf Club.
Elder's round included three birdies, but a costly double bogey on hole No. 12, his 17th of the day, proved to be the difference between finishing third and in a tie for first. He birdied his final hole to secure third place.
Point Park carded a team score of 355, which was 33 shots behind champion Penn State-Behrend.
The Pioneers' scoring was rounded out by Drew Kury (Crafton/Carlynton), who shot a 90, and Nick Fearby (Medina, N.Y..Medina) and Brian Uhrmacher (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Athena), who each shot 94.
The Point Park men's golf team was reinstated in June after a nearly four-decade layoff. The Pioneers compete in the third of their four fall events Oct. 5 at the Westminster Fall Invitational held at New Castle Country Club.
