Point Park's Kowalski fires 1-under 69 to take first-round lead at CMU tourney

APOLLO, Pa. – Point Park University men’s golfer Darin Kowalski fired a 1-under par 69 Saturday to take a two-shot lead after one round at the Edward Jones Shootout hosted by Carnegie Mellon University.
The senior transfer from CCAC-South, Kowalski led the field with five birdies at The Links at Spring Church, and he was the only player under par on the 6,512-yard, links-style layout. Kowalski played the front nine in 1-under (34), and he shot even par (35) on the back.
The final round will be held Sunday starting at 8:30 a.m., and Kowalski is two shots clear of the field. John Williams of Washington & Jefferson shot a 71 (+1) while McDaniel’s Greg Bowman shot a 72 (+2).
Kowalski, a native of North Hutingdon and a graduate of Serra Catholic High School, won the Westminster Spring Invitational (March 29) in the only other event of his Point Park career.
As a team, Point Park stands eighth of 11 teams after one round with a team score of 333.
Freshman Austin Elder (Warren, Ohio/Howland) shot a 78 and is in a tie for 17th place. Alex Richert (Shaler/North Caholic) is tied for 26th after an opening-round 81. Richert, a transfer from CCAC-North is playing in his second event since transferring at the start of the spring semester.
Point Park’s squad was rounded out by Nicholas Fearby (Medina, N.Y./Medina) and Nick Wukich (Sewickley/Quaker Valley), who each shot 105. Fearby rebounded to shoot 43 on his second nine after going out in 62.
Washington & Jefferson has the team lead after 18 holes with a 304, which is one stroke ahead of McDaniel (305). St. John Fisher (307) is in third while host Carnegie Mellon (308) sits in fourth.
