Kowalski, Elder lead Pioneers on first day of American Mideast Conference tourney

MT. VERNON, Ohio -- Darin Kowalski and Austin Elder led the Point Park University men's golf team on the first day of the American Mideast Conference/NAIA Region IX Championship Thursday.
The two-day event is being held at Apple Valley Golf Club in Mt. Vernon, Ohio, and it includes 27 holes each day. Point Park, which reinstated its men's golf team this year after a nearly four-decade absence is competing in the AMC/NAIA Region IX tourney for the first time.
Kowalski (North Huntingdon/Serra Catholic) opened the tournament with a 75 (+3), and he shot a 40 on his last nine holes of the day to put him at 7-over par after 27 holes. A senior transfer from CCAC-South, Kowalski stands in 16th place after day one with a total of 115.
Elder (Warren, Ohio/Howland), a freshman, shot a 79 (+7) on his first 18 holes and then closed his day with a 39 to put him at 118 (+10) for the tournament. Elder is in 22nd place in a field of 50 players.
After 27 holes, Point Park stands in 10th place of 10 teams with a team score 522.
Nick Wukich (Sewickley/Quaker Valley) opened with a 92 and finished with a 50 for a 27-hole total of 142. Nick Fearby (Medina, N.Y./Medina) shot 102-45--146.
Point Park's fifth participant, Alex Richert (Shaler/North Catholic), was disqualified.
