GROVE CITY, Pa. - The Point Park University men's golf team finished up its fall schedule Wednesday by competing at the Grove City Invitational. The Pioneers finished fifth of five teams, and freshman Austin Elder registered his third top-10 placement in four fall meets.
Elder finished in a three-way tie for ninth place with an 8-over par score of 80 at Grove City Country Club. The freshman from Warren, Ohio, who started his day on hole No. 6, carded a 42 on the front nine and a 38 on the back.
Other top-10 finishes for Elder this fall include a tie for second at the Westminster Invitational Oct. 5, and a third-place showing at the La Roche Fall Invitational Sept. 29.
Point Park carded a team score of 388 Wednesday. American Mideast Conference member Notre Dame (Ohio) took the team title with a 301, which was 18 shots better than second-placed Westminster.
On a day in which only eight players broke 80, Notre Dame's John Angelo took medalist honors with a 3-under 69 (33-36). Angelo won by six strokes over Ben Van Truenen of Grove City.
Nick Fearby shot a 93 for Point Park. The junior from Medina, N.Y., shot a 44 on the second nine. Rounding out the Pioneers' scoring were Brian Uhrmacher (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Athena) with a 102, and Josh Frketic (East McKeesport/East Allegheny) with a 113.
Wednesday's tournament was the fourth and final event on the Pioneers' fall schedule. Point Park reinstated its men's golf program in June after a nearly four-decade hiatus. The tournament was originally scheduled for Saturday, but it was postponed due to rainy weather. The Pioneers last competed nearly three weeks ago at Westminster.
