Point Park men's golf wins La Roche Invitational, Daley and Elder finish 1-2
Sept. 28, 2010
NORTH HILLS, Pa. – The Point Park University men’s golf team won its first tournament since 1971 Tuesday at the La Roche College Invitational.
Point Park fired a team score of 321 to win the tournament at Wildwood Golf Club. The Pioneers had the top two individual finishers – freshman James Daley (Youngstown, OH) fired a 76 to take medalist honors, and sophomore Austin Elder (Warren, OH) placed second with a 78.
Conditions were cold and rainy, which contributed to tough scoring.
The Point Park men’s golf program is in its second year since being reinstated last year. The program was discontinued in 1972, and the last tournament that the Pioneers won was their Pioneer Invitational in 1971.
Point Park’s squad was rounded out with an 82 from junior Alejandro Bernardini (Cuernavaca Morelos, Mexico), an 85 from freshman Chris Bowen (Bethel Park, Pa.) and an 86 from freshman Michael Caris (Van Buren, OH).
Point Park’s had started its season last weekend by taking sixth place at the Allegheny Invitational with scores of 299 and 305 for a two-day total of 604.
The Pioneers visit the Westminster Invitational on Monday. The tournament will be held a New Castle Country Club.
