BEAVERCREEK, Ohio -- The Point Park University men's golf teams sits tied for second of six teams after Thursday's first round of the Cedarville Invitational being played at Beavercreek Country Club in Beavercreek,Ohio.
The Pioneers shot a team score of 315 on a tough scoring day on a difficult course, and they are one shot behind host Cedarville for the team lead. Walsh also shot 315, and Notre Dame (OH) is one stroke behind in fourth at 316. The final round is Friday with tee times beginning at 9:30 a.m.
Only one player in the entire tournament shot under par, and roughly two thirds of the field failed to break 80. Junior Chris Bowen, from Bethel Park, Pa., led Point Park with an opening 75, which is good for a tie for third place individually. Bowen is four shots back of the leader Tyler Reis of Tiffin, who shot 1-under 71 as and is competing as an individual.
Sophomore Collin Holmes fired a 78 and is tied for ninth to give the Pioneers two players in the top 10. Senior Billy Wivell and junior James Daley each shot 81 to tie for 19th. Senior Austin Elder had a tough day with an 89.
Cedarville was the only team to put three players in the 70s, and thus it has the one-shot lead. Point Park will look for back-to-back wins in Friday's final round. The Pioneers won their debut event of the spring last weekend at the Berea (Ky.) College Spring Tee-Off.
