KIAC PRESEASON POLL

PITTSBURGH -- Point Park University came in third of seven teams in the 2013 KIAC Men's Golf Preseason Coaches' Poll that was announced by the league office on Sunday (Jan. 27, 2013). The Pioneers, newcomers to the KIAC this year, totaled 39 points in the poll and earned two first-place votes.

Defending KIAC Tournament champion Brescia (Ky.) was picked as the KIAC preseason favorite with 44 points and a conference-high three first-place votes. Asbury (Ky.) was picked second with 40 points and one first-place votes followed by Point Park (39 points, 1 first-place vote) and IU East (30 points, 1 first-place vote).

"We like being the underdog," said Pioneers' fourth-year head coach Gabe Bubon. "But we don't think we are. We will challenger for the conference title."

The 2013 KIAC Men's Golf Tournament is scheduled for April 29-30 at Gibson Bay in Richmond, Ky.

Point Park has 4 of 5 players returning from last year's American Mideast Conference Tournament championship lineup. Senior Austin Elder, sophomore Collin Holmes, senior Billy Wivell and juniors Chris Bowen and James Daley are all players who average in the 70s.

The Pioneers are coming off a fairly strong fall season in which they placed first in a difficult field at the Allegheny Invitational and also took second at the Washington & Jefferson Invitational.

Point Park's scoring average this past fall was 305.7, which takes into account tougher scoring conditions in the fall weather. Some of Point Park's best golf in the fall came at the California (Pa.) Invitational in which they shot 293-295-310 to place 8th of 16 teams at the NCAA Division II event.
