Point Park in first place with 8-shot lead after Rd 1 of Berea Spring Tee-Off

RICHMOND, Ky. -- The Point Park University men's golf team is in first place with an eight-shot lead after Friday's first round of the Berea (Ky.) College Spring Tee-Off at Battlefield Golf Club in Richmond, Ky.
It was the first tournament of the spring for the Pioneers, who shot 297 over the first 18 holes of the 36-hole tourney. The final round is Saturday at 9 a.m.
The tournament field includes all seven teams from the Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, of which Point Park is a first-year member. The Pioneers were picked to finish 3rd of 7 teams in the KIAC Men's Golf Preseason Coaches' Poll (Jan. 28).
Point Park is in first place of eight teams, and eight shots back in a tie for second are KIAC member Asbury (Ky.) and non-conference opponent Thomas More (Ky.) each with 305. IU East is in fourth place at 316 followed by four-time defending KIAC champion Brescia (Ky.) in fifth at 320.
Senior Billy Wivell, a native of Deer Lakes, Pa., shot a 71 to lead Point Park on Friday. Junior James Daley (Youngstown, Ohio) shot 73, and senior Austin Elder (Warren, Ohio) turned in a 74. The team score was rounded out with a 79 from junior Chris Bowen (Bethel Park, Pa.).
Point Park has three of the two five individuals after 18 holes. Wivell is in second place individually, one shot back of first-round leader Steven Brooks of Asbury with a 70. Daley is in third place, and Elder is tied for fourth with Asbury's Jon Wilkes.
Point Park sophomore Collin Holmes totaled an 82 after a rough start, but he shot 1-under over his final 13 holes. Junior Steve Veydt shot an 81 competing as an individual.
