Point Park University Men's Golf wins Mt. Vernon Nazarene Invitational

MT. VERNON, Ohio -- The Point Park University men's golf team notched its second win in three spring events with the team championship on Saturday (April 19) at the Mt. Vernon Nazarene Invitational.
The 36-hole tournament was played entirely in one day at Chapel Hill Golf Club, and the Pioneers shot a team score of 295 in each round for a three-shot victory over host Mt. Vernon Nazarene. Point Park led the Cougars by two shots after 18 holes, and MVNU shot rounds of 297 and 296.
Point Park bested a field of nine teams although the Pioneers and host Mt. Vernon Nazarene made it a two-team race. The next closest school was Malone in third with a two-round total of 608 followed by Columbus State CC (609) and Spring Arbor (611) to round out the top five.
Point Park junior Collin Holmes, from Avon Lake, Ohio, took second place individually by shooting two rounds of even-par 72. Holmes' 36-hole score of 144 (E) was five shots behind medalist Charlie Phillips of MVNU, shot 5-under for the tournament with strong rounds of 70 and 69.
The Pioneers' Steve Veydt, from Cecil, Pa., placed fifth at 148 (+4) with matching rounds of 74. Teammates James Daley (75-74) and Eric Poplowski (74-75) were one shot back of that at 149 (+5) to tie for sixth. Chris Bowen (77-76) had a tournament totl of 153 (+9) to tie for 14th.
Point Park's victory gives it the winning feeling going into the KIAC Tournament next week, April 22-23 for 54 holes at Gibson Bay Golf Club in Richmond, Ky. The Pioneers are the defending KIAC champions, and they will be seeking their second-straight NAIA national tournament qualification for the winner of the conference tournament.
