CLARION, Pa. -- The Point Park University men's golf team is tied for sixth of 12 teams after the first round of the Hal Hansen Tournament hosted by Clarion on Sunday at Clarion Oaks Golf Club.
The Pioneers shot 302 to put themselves right in the middle of a crowded leaderboard. Nine teams shot between 300 and 303, and everyone is trailing first-round leader IUP, which shot 290. The final round is 18 holes on Monday.
After IUP, California (Pa.) and Carnegie Mellon are tied for second at 300. Clarion and Mercyhurst are next at 301 followed by Point Park and West Chester at 302. The tournament field of 12 teams includes 10 from NCAA Division II, Point Park from NAIA and CMU from NCAA Division III.
Chris Bowen, a senior from Bethel Park, Pa., led Point Park with a 73 on Sunday. Junior Collin Holmes, from Avon Lake, Ohio, fired a 74. Newcomers Kevin Loutsenhizer (77) and Eric Poplowski (78) were next, and senior James Daley came in with an 83 to round out the team scoring. Junior Michael Popovec is playing as an individual and shot 82.
Point Park is opening its fall schedule this weekend at Clarion. The Pioneers have won back-to-back conference championships and went to their first-ever NAIA national tournament last spring. They have three returning players from that NAIA tourney -- Bowen, Holmes and Daley.
The Pioneers have restocked the roster with some talented newcomers including the two who are playing this weekend. Poplowski, a junior, was a junior college All-American at CCAC-Allegheny, and Loutsenhizer, also a junior, was the top player at La Roche the last two years and was the 2011-12 AMCC Player of the Year.
Check back Monday for final results for the tournament. Follow the Pioneers on Twitter @PointParkSports for results as they become available.
