April 17, 2011
MADISON, Ohio -- The Point Park University men's golf team placed in a tie for 6th place out of 13 teams at this weekend's Lake Erie Spring Invitational held at Madison Country Club. In a tournament field made up of almost entirely NCAA Division II schools, NAIA Point Park had a final-round 322 Sunday to gain ground in the final standings.
The Pioneers were in eighth place after Saturday's first round, and they had a two-day total of 640. Scoring conditions were poor both days with rain and wind contributing to higher scores.
Findlay was the team champion at 603 (303-300) after placing three individuals in the top 10. Wayne State was one shot back at 604, and Saginaw Valley State placed third at 618. Point Park, which is only in its second year since being reinstated, tied with Gannon and placed ahead of six NCAA Division II shools.
Austin Elder was Point Park's top performer as the sophomore from Warren, Ohio, tied for seventh at 152. Elder shot a 4-over 75 in the first round, which was just three shots off the 18-hole lead. He posted a 77 early Sunday and was actually the leader in the clubhouse, but he ended up finishing six shots behind medalist Matt Jones of Findlay.
Elder's T-7th finish keeps alive his streak of eight top-10s in eight events this year.
Alejandro Bernardini, a junior from Mexico, shot a 77 Sunday to gain ground on the leaderboard and finish T-26. Bernardini had a two-day total of 157. James Daley (82-83) finished at 165, which was one shot ahead of Chris Bowen (81-85) at 166. Chris Cichra (87-85) totaled 172.
Point Park visits the Mercyhurst Invitational Thursday and Friday for another NCAA Division II tournament.
