Point Park men's golf T-2nd after Rd 1 at Allegheny Tournament

MEADVILLE, Pa. -- The Point Park University men's golf team is just three shots off the lead and tied for second place after Sunday's first round of the 39th Annual Gary Kuhn Invitational hosted by Allegheny College at the Country Club of Meadville.
The Pioneers fired a team score of 297 (+9) to tie former American Mideast Conference rival Roberts Wesleyan for second place. Those teams are three shots behind leader and host Allegheny at 294 (+6) after 18 holes. The tournament concludes with the final round beginning Monday at 8:30 a.m.
Of the 15 teams in the tournament, only four broke 300. Carnegie Mellon (299) is in fourth place followed by McDaniel (300) and Rochester (301).
Of the 80 individuals in the field, all five of Point Park's golfers were in the top 27 places after the first round. Senior Billy Wivell, from Deer Lakes, led the way as his 1-over 73 has him tied for 8th place individually.
Sophomore Collin Holmes (Avon Lake, Ohio) and junior James Daley (Youngstown, Ohio) are among the eight players tied for 10th at 2-over 74. Senior Austin Elder (Warren, Ohio) and junior Chris Bowen (Bethel Park, Pa.) are tied for 27th with a 4-over 76.
The individual leader is Cody Mewhirter of McDaniel, who first-round 69 (-3) included a 30 on the back nine. There were a total of six players under par.
