FINAL RESULTS: TEAM, INDIVIDUAL

MEADVILLE, Pa. -- The Point Park University men's golf team has come a long way in four years. This past weekend at the Guy W. Kuhn Invitational hosted by Allegheny College was testament to that.

Point Park put together two strong rounds Sunday and Monday and won the team title with a one-shot victory over host Allegheny.

The Pioneers were three shots off the lead and tied for second place after firing a 297 in Sunday's first round. Point Park followed that up with a team score of 300 in Monday's final round for a tournament total of 597. That gave the Pioneers a one-shot win over first-round leader Allegheny, which had rounds of 294-304--598.

Roberts Wesleyan (297-302--599) finished two shots back in third place, and Carnegie Mellon (299-306--605) placed fourth.

"This was a very satisfying win for our team and for our program," said fourth-year Point Park head coach Gabe Bubon. "This is very close to being up there with last year's American Mideast Conference championship in terms of biggest wins for us.

"We've been coming to this tournament every year, and we've come along way since we played here four years ago. For me, and for Austin (Elder) -- a player who played in this as a freshman -- and all the guys, it is very satisfying."

On Sept. 20-21, 2009, Point Park played its first men's golf tournament in 37 years when it visited the Guy W. Kuhn Invitational hosted by Allegheny. The Pioneers re-instated the program after a near four-decade hiatus at the school.

That weekend, the Pioneers came in dead last -- 18th of 18 teams -- with tournament totals of 373-352--725. Later that year, the Pioneers finished 10th of 10 teams at the AMC Tournament. Fast forward four seasons, and not only does Point Park have an AMC Tournament title on its resume in April 2012, it also has a title at the Allegheny Invitational this weekend.

Point Park got the slim win thanks to some clutch putts by its top two finishers on the 36th-and-final hole of the tournament. Senior Austin Elder, from Warren, Ohio, sank a difficult, downhill, 15-footer for birdie on his last hole. Junior Chris Bowen, from Bethel Park, Pa., drained a 10-footer for par on his final hole, and Point Park needed both of those for the win.

Elder and Bowen each shot par 72 in the final round and finished tied for sixth in the tournament. Both players turned in identical tournament scorecards of 76-72--148 (+4).

In the field of 80 individual players, Point Park's five competitors all finished in the top 25. Sophomore Collin Holmes, from Avon Lake, Ohio, tied for 15th with scores of 74-77--151 (+7). Junior James Daley, from Youngstown, Ohio, tied for 19th with rounds of 74-79--153 (+9).

Billy Wivell, a senior from Deer Lakes, turned in a two-day total of 154 (+10) to finish tied for 25th. Although he shot 81 in the final round, he put up a strong score of 73 in the first round.

Over the last four years, Elder has played in just about every tournament except for being out due to injury. Daley and Bowen, a pair of juniors, have been involved for nearly every tourney the last three years. Wivell and Holmes came to the team last year as a transfer and an incoming freshman, respectively.

Since its re-instatement in the fall of 2009, the Point Park men's golf team has won a total of seven tournaments. The Pioneers won three events in each of the last two seasons. Point Park's previous finishes at the Allegheny tournament were 18th in 2009, 6th in 2010 and 9th in 2011.

Point Park's next competition will be the California (Pa.) Invitational Sept. 29-30 at Cedarbrook Golf Course in Belle Vernon, Pa.
