Elder places first individually, Pioneers take second at Grove City tourney
Sept. 13, 2011
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- Point Park University junior men's golfer Austin Elder fired a 1-over par 73 Tuesday at Grove City Country Club to take first place at the Grove City Invitational. As a team, the Pioneers had a score 314 to finish second.
It was the season opening tournament for Point Park, which shot 314 along with Carnegie Mellon. But Carnegie Mellon won first place by virtue of a tiebreaker that takes into account the score of a team's fifth golfer.
Each team sends out five players, and the top four scores make up the team score. Making up the Point Park score along with Elder were Alejandro Bernardini (77), Chris Bowen (79), Colin Holmes (85). James Daley shot 86.
Elder's win came by one shot over CMU's Ian Bangor, who finished at 2-over 74. Bernardini finished in a tie for fourth place with his 77.
Elder's victory was the first of his career. The Warren, Ohio, had finished second place in a tournament six times in the 20 events he had played in his first two years. Twice he finished second to a Point Park teammate. But Tuesday, the Pioneers' top golfer the last two years got win number one.
Point Park also had a B Team entered in the event. Shane Killeen led the B Team with an 83, and Michael Popovec was close behind with an 84. Other players competing were Steve Veydt (87), Jerry Ferrell (88) and Chris Cichra (89).
The B Team's score of 342 placed in 9th place of 10 teams.
The Point Park men's golf team is in competition next Sept. 18-19 at the Allegheny College Invitational.
The Pioneers' men's golf program is in just its third year of existence after 37 years of not having the sport at the school. Point Park returns its top five players from last year, and that top five was made up of two sophomores and three freshmen a year ago. This year, Point Park added several freshmen and a couple of transfers to create a deep group of talented players.
