GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Point Park University men's soccer team managed just seven total shots and lost at Grove City College, 1-0, in a non-conference game Friday afternoon.
Grove City (3-5, 0-0 PAC) got the only goal it needed when Tim Shackleton scored in the 37th minute for a 1-0 halftime lead. Point Park (3-4, 3-0 KIAC) had just three shots on goal and was unable to get on the board in being out-shot, 19-7.
The loss ends a modest, two-game win streak for the Pioneers, who had entered the game as winners of three of their last four games. Friday's game ended a stretch of Point Park having six of its first seven games away from home.
It was a defense breakdown that allowed Grove City's goal late in the first half. The Point Park defense lost control when the ball was played back from its midfield.
Trying to get the equalizier in the second half, the Pioneers went to a 3-4-3 formation with three forwards. Although that resulted in some chances, Grove City kept the Pioneers scoreless.
Point Park goalkeeper Mitchell Kelman, a junior from Frederick, Md., had a season-high 10 saves. Brendon Alfery made three saves to pick up the shutout for Grove City.
Point Park returns to action on Sunday with a home game versus non-conference Daemen (NY). Game time is 1 p.m. at Century United South Park Complex for what had been an American Mideast Conference rivalry in years past.
