Slow starts costs Point Park in 2-1, non-conference loss to W&J

CHESWICK, Pa. -- Point Park University fell behind Washington & Jefferson by two goals in the first 12 goals minutes and went on to lose the non-conference men's soccer game at Founders Field, 2-1, on Tuesday night.

Point Park (7-4 overall, 2-2 AMC) was the victim of an own goal just 6:50 into the game, and six minutes later, Mike Pappas scored the eventual game-winner for Washington & Jefferson (8-2-2, 3-0 PAC).

On Pappas' goal, teammate Sean Maddock entered the ball into the box from about 40 yards away, and Pappas headed it into the net.

Point Park cut the deficit in half when Manuel Schneckenreither, a native of Austria, scored his team-leading, ninth goal of the year. Francis Tabi (Kumasi, Ghana) assisted on the play. But Point Park was unable to get the tying goal in the final 30 minutes.

Washington & Jefferson has won four games in a row and is unbeaten in its last five. Point Park has lost three of four following a 6-1 start.

Zeke O'Donnell (Butler, Pa./Butler) played all 90 minutes in goal for Point Park and made five saves. For the Presidents, Brandon Kern and Pete Tomlinson each played 45 minutes in net, and they combined for three saves.

Point Park gets back into conference play with Saturday's visit to Roberts Wesleyan. The AMC game starts at 5 p.m.
