Malone gets quick goal in overtime to edge Point Park, 2-1, in AMC game
Sept. 28, 2010
CHESWICK, Pa. -- Malone University scored 43 seconds into overtime to edge Point Park University, 2-1, in an American Mideast Conference men's soccer game Tuesday night at Founders Field.
Point Park (6-2 overall, 1-1 AMC) and Malone (3-7, 1-2) played the first 76 minutes to a 0-0 stand still before Malone's Kevin Aquino gave his team a 1-0 lead with a goal in the 77th minute.
Point Park was able to get the tying goal, however, as Anthony Russo (Plum, Pa./Plum), pictured, scored in the 82nd minute to force overtime. Russo's first goal of the year was set up by Matt Annecchiarico (Woodbrige,Ont.), who put the ball in play from a corner kick.
As overtime started, Malone worked the ball down the left side, and Rubem Miranda was able to cross the ball into Adam Sharpnack, who put in the winning goal.
Point Park held a 14-11 advantage in shots, and both teams had five shots on goal. What was not reflected in the shots-on-goal statistics was that both teams had plenty of scoring opportunities sail wide of the target, particularly Point Park.
The Point Park offense had several nicely executed balls that set up scoring opportunities, but they couldn't find the back of the net.
Point Park goalkeeper Zeke O'Donnell played all 90 minutes, and he made three saves.
The Pioneers host non-conference opponent La Roche for a game on Thursday. Game time at Founders Field is 7 p.m. Point Park gets back into AMC play Saturday at Cedarville.
Thursday night is USG T-Shirt. All Point Park students will receive a free t-shirt courtesy USG, while supplies last.
