Palaza's goal gives Point Park 1-0, AMC victory at Daemen

Oct. 9, 2010

AMHERST, N.Y. -- Adelmo Palaza's first-career goal gave the Point Park University men's soccer team a 1-0 victory at Daemen College in an American Mideast Conference game Saturday.

Box Score

Palaza (pictured), a senior midfielder from West Homestead and Steel Valley High School, put up the game's only tally in the 42nd minute, and junior goalkeeper Zeke O'Donnell made it stand up in earning his second shutout of the year.

With the win, Point Park improves to 7-3 overall and evens its AMC record a 2-2. Daemen is 4-7 overall and 0-4 AMC.

The victory gets the Pioneers back on track in the conference after a pair of losses in a row. Point Park had lost to Malone, 2-1, and Cedarville, 5-0, in its last two games.

Freshman forward Manuel Schneckenreither, a native of Austria, assisted on Palaza's goal to give Point Park a 1-0 lead late in the first half.

Point Park held a 14-7 advantage in shots. O'Donnell, from Butler, Pa., made three saves and faced seven shots in 90 minutes.

The Pioneers earned the win despite missing two important starters -- central defender Andres Escobar, from Colombia, and forward Francis Tabi of Ghana. Both players were suspended for the game because of the red cards they received last weekend versus Cedarville.

Point Park's next game is Tuesday at home versus non-conference Washington & Jefferson. Game time at Founders Field is 7 p.m. The Pioneers' next AMC game is Saturday at Roberts Wesleyan (5 p.m.).
