Houghton cruises past Point Park in AMC game

Sept. 19, 2009

CHESWICK, Pa. - Houghton shut out Point Park, 3-0, Saturday in an American Mideast Conference men's soccer match at Founders Field.

Point Park (0-6 overall, 0-3 AMC) and Houghton (4-4, 2-0) played even for the first 20 minutes before Daniel Smith scored his first of two goals to start the scoring for the Highlanders.

Smith got his first tally on an unassisted goal in the 20th minute. The freshman from Nairobi, Kenya, gave Houghton a 2-0 lead nine minutes later. Zach Wise assisted on the play.

Fifteen minutes into the second half, Steve Grudda made it 3-0 after taking a pass from Luke Sanford.

Point Park goalkeeper Zeke O'Donnell (Butler/Butler) made seven saves in 90 minutes of action. O'Donnell did his best to keep the Pioneers in the game as he faced a barrage of shots. Houghton held a 27-2 advantage in shots, and hit the crossbar or post about a half a dozen times.

Point Park visits Pitt-Greensburg for a non-conference game Tuesday (5 p.m.). After Tuesday's game, the Pioneers will take a week off due to the Pittsburgh Summit before visiting Malone Sept. 29.

Point Park is closing its campus Sept. 23-26 due to the Summit, which will be held in Pittsburgh from Sept. 24-25. No athletic events or practices will be held while the campus is closed.
