Daemen edges Point Park in double overtime, 2-1

CHESWICK - The Point Park University men's soccer team nearly got its first victory of the season Saturday, but the Pioneers were edged by Daemen, 2-1, in double overtime at Founders Field.


Daemen (2-2 overall, 1-0 AMC) won the American Mideast Conference game when Erik Tellgren scored the deciding goal with one minute gone in the second extra period.

Point Park (0-5, 0-2) had taken a 1-0 lead when Shane Lucas (West Homestead/Steel Valley) scored in the 18th minute. Lucas headed the ball into the net after receiving a corner kick from Jeremy Olson (Indiana/Indiana)

The Pioneers held the 1-0 lead until Steve Doermer converted a penalty kick to score's Daemen's first goal with one minute left in the first half. But neither team scored for the next 57 minutes until Tellgren's game winner.

Point Park had plenty of scoring chances and held an 18-9 advantage in shots.

Zeke O'Donnell (Butler/Butler) made seven saves and went the distance as Point Park's goalkeeper.

The Pioneers will look for their first victory of the season by hosting Houghton in an American Mideast Conference game Saturday at 4 p.m.
