ALLIANCE, Ohio -- Alex Sala buried a free kick from 24 yards out to lift Point Park University to a 2-1, non-conference victory at Mt. Union in a men's soccer game Sunday.
Sala's goal, his third of the year, came in the 54th minute, and it went as the game-winner. Point Park goalkeeper Mitchell Kelman preserved the win when he made a key save in the 88th minute for one of his four stops.
Point Park (4-2, 0-1 AMC) and Mt. Union (5-3) played to a scoreless tie at halftime, but the teams combined for three goals the first nine minutes of the second half.
Matt Annecchiarico opened the scoring when his goal in the 48th minute gave Point Park a 1-0 lead. Jack Pilkinton assisted on the play.
Mt. Union, an NCAA Division III school, tied things up when Thomas Beck scored off a rebound in the 53rd minute.
But just 1:48 later, Sala gave Point Park a lead that it would not relingquish.
Point Park held a 12-11 lead in shots, and four of the Pioneers' shots were on goal. Fouls were very even as well with Mt Union's 12 being one more than Point Park.
The Pioneers are not in action for another six days when they welcome new AMC member Fisher for two games Sept. 24-25. Fisher, from Boston, Mass., visits Founders Field Saturday at 7 p.m. and Sunday at 3 p.m.
