Sept. 2, 2011

MARIETTA, Ohio -- After nearly 80 minutes of scoreless soccer in 95-degree heat, Lucas Silva scored the game's only goal to give Point Park University a 1-0 victory at Marietta in a non-conference men's soccer game Friday.

Silva (pictured), a freshman from Sao Paulo, Brazil, gave Point Park (1-0) a win in its season opener and put the host team of the Marietta Classic at 0-1.

Point Park's sophomore goalkeeper Mitchell Kelman made his first career start and earned the shutout. The native of Frederick, Md., was playing for the injured Zeke O'Donnell, a senior who has started the last two years.

The teams played fairly even for the first half as Point Park held a slim advantage in shots, 9-7. But in the second half, the Pioneers of Point Park outshot the host Pioneers, 11-3. For the game, Point Park held a 20-10 edge in shots.

Point Park concludes the two-day, weekend event versus the College of Wooster at 12 p.m. Saturday.
