PITTSBURGH -- The Point Park University men's soccer team lost to Roberts Wesleyan, 2-0, Friday afternoon at Cupples Stadium in the final American Mideast Conference game for both teams.
Point Park (11-4-1, 6-3-1 AMC) absorbed its first conference loss versus a playoff-eligible team in the conference. Both of the Pioneers' AMC losses had been to Walsh (10-0 AMC), which is not eligible for the conference playoffs because it is in year two of NCAA Division II provisional status.
Regardless of Friday's loss to Roberts Wesleyan (8-9-1, 6-4 AMC), Point Park had already wrapped up the top playoff seed and the right to host the AMC Tournament Nov. 4-5 after last weekend's win over Daemen.
Roberts Wesleyan, the No. 2 in next week's four-team playoff field, got on the board early with Johnny Lobene's goal in the 12th minute. It was the only shot the Raiders registered in the first half, and although Point Park controlled ball possession for a majority of the game, Roberts made it a 2-0 lead on Dominic Coco's tally in the 63rd minute.
Point Park held a 12-9 advantage in shots, including 6-1 in the first 45 minutes. The Pioneers had plenty of opportunities to score but were still kept off the scoreboard by Roberts goalkeeper Michael Scavone, who made four saves in the shutout.
Point Park had a 10-3 edge in corner kicks, a statistic that was 8-0 in favor of the Pioneers in the first half. The Pioneers' best chance came in a penalty kick in the 64th minute. But they came up empty of the attempt and also on two successive rebound attempts after the penalty try.
Zeke O'Donnell got the start in goal for Point Park on his Senior Day. It was the second start of the year for O'Donnell, a two-year starter who had missed all but one game due to injury.
The Pioneers honored seven seniors in all. Point Park seniors this year are O'Donnell, Shane Lucas, Anthony Russo, Andres Escobar, Miguel Alvarez, Reid Gustin and Wido Sagerer. That group was a combined 5-28-1 its first two years but is 19-13-1 the past two years.
Point Park will serve as the host team for the AMC Tournament Nov. 4-5. The location, schedule and final bracket for the tournament are TBA. More details will be available over the weekend. Check the Point Park athletic website for tournament info early next week.
Seeds one through three have already been decided, and the fourth and final seed will be determined over the weekend. As the top seed, Point Park will play No. 4 seed, which will be either Daemen or Fisher based on Saturday's result when those teams play. Second-seeded Roberts Wesleyan will play No. 3 seed Houghton in the other semifinal game.
