No. 8 Vanguard (Calif.) gets late goals to beat Point Park, 3-1

RIO GRANDE, Ohio -- NAIA No. 8 Vanguard (Calif.) scored two late goals to beat Point Park University, 3-1, in a men's soccer game as part of the Rio Grande Soccer Classic on Friday night.

The Pioneers (2-1) tied the score at 1-1 on Paul Carr's goal in the 70th minute. But Vanguard (3-0) stayed unbeaten by putting together goals by Jesus Fregoso in the 83rd and 85th minutes to come away with the victory.

Vanguard had taken a 1-0 lead on Jose Arellano's tally in the 30th minute on a direct kick. The score remained 1-0 at the half when Vanguard held a 7-4 advantage in shots.

The Lions held an advantage of 11-4 in shots the final 45 minutes, but Point Park kept things even on the scoreboard until the closing minutes.

The loss by Point Park snapped the Pioneers' streak of 12 straight regular-season victories. Point Park won its final 10 regular season games of last year and its first two this year.

Point Park continues play at the Rio Grande Soccer Classic on Saturday versus Westmont (Calif.) at 4 p.m. Westmont narrowly lost to No. 5 Rio Grande, 2-1, in double overtime on Saturday night. Vanguard, meanwhile, will face Rio Grande at 7 p.m. Saturday in the NAIA Men's Soccer Game of the Week.
