MT. VERNON, Ohio -- The Point Park University men's soccer team came away with a 1-0 win at Mt. Vernon Nazarene in a non-conference game Saturday thanks to senior midfielder Jonty Loukes scoring on a free kick in the 83rd minute.
It was a very even game with the Pioneers (1-1, 0-0 KIAC) holding a slim lead in shots, 11-10. But it was Loukes' unassisted attempt from just outside of the top-right corner of the 18-yard box that made the difference.
Both teams had their chances -- Point Park had five of its 11 shots on goal, and MVNU (1-2-1) had six of its 10 shots on target. Point Park's junior goalkeeper Zak Borzovoy made six saves, five of which came in the second half, to earn the shutout in 90 minutes. MVNU's Adam Miller made four saves.
Following the eventual game-winning goal, a total of three red cards were handed out to the teams. MVNU picked up two -- including one on the Cougars' bench.
The Pioneers are in action again on Tuesday when they travel to non-conference opponent Waynesburg. Kickoff is 6:30 p.m.
