PORTSMOUTH, Ohio -- Lucas Silva got another hat trick, his second one in a row, as the No. 21-ranked Point Park University men's soccer team set the early tone at Shawnee State University in a 4-1, non-conference victory on Saturday.
The Pioneers (7-2, 2-0 KIAC), ranked No. 21 in this week's NAIA Top 25 Poll, improved to a perfect 4-0 on the road.
Silva, a senior from Sao Paulo, Brazil, was well on his way to a hat trick when he put in penalty kick just 32 seconds after kickoff and took an assist from Max Flick for his second goal just 6:42 into the game. The Pioneers got the early penatly try due to a handball in the penalty area.
Shawnee State (2-9-2), which has played a tough schedule and has a 0-0 tie on its resume versus then-No. 1 Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) on Sept. 23, got back into the game with Joe Lamont's goal in the 30th minute to cut it to 2-1.
But Point Park came out of the halftime locker room building on the 2-1 lead as Silva's put the game away for his hat trick in the 65th minute on an unassisted goal.
The final margin was stretched out to 4-1 when Rejep Mukhammedov, from Uzbekistan, put in his first-career goal in the 82nd minute. Flick, from Beaver Falls, picked up his second assist on the play.
The Pioneers held a 17-15 advantage in shots, which got a boost from 11 shots in the second half. Point Park goalkeeper Zak Borzovoy made five saves and gave up just the one goal in 90 minutes.
Silva now has 11 goals on the year, which lead the team. He is among the NAIA leaders with 1.22 goals per game, and his 11 goals this year establish a career high. He scored 10 goals as a freshman in 2011.
Saturday's win started a busy stretch of five games in eight days for the Pioneers. They will host PSU-Beaver Monday and Washington & Jefferson on Wednesday followed by a road trip to St. Catharine (Ky.) and Brescia (Ky.) on Oct. 17-18.
