PITTSBURGH -- Point Park University men's soccer sophomore goalkeeper Derrik Whiten, from Vandergrift, Pa., and Kiski Area High School, has been named the KIAC Men's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week for Oct. 7-13. It is the second week in a row that Whiten has won the award.
Whiten and the Pioneers (7-5-1, 2-0-0 KIAC) played only one game last week, but it was a big victory at home, 1-0, over Asbury (Ky.) University. Whiten made seven saves in the shutout to keep Point Park unbeaten in conference play and in the race for first place in the KIAC.
Whiten has had a lock on the KIAC Men's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week award the last two weeks because he has given up just one goal in four games during that time. Point Park has won all four of those games -- the last three by shutout -- and takes its four-game win streak into Saturday's KIAC home game versus Brescia (Ky.) (4-5, 3-0 KIAC).
Whiten has started the last 12 games with a record of 7-5. He has been a big part of the four-game win streak with Point Park dominating on the score board, 23-1. The only goal he gave up the last two weeks has come on a penalty kick.
