Point Park softball opens 2011 with split on Day 1 of Florida Trip

March 6, 2011

KISSIMMEE, Fla. – The Point Park University softball team opened its season Sunday by winning one of two games at the Rebel Spring Games in Kissimmee, Fla. The Pioneers (1-1) opened with a 4-0 loss to Ursinus (PA) and a 3-0 victory over Waynesburg (PA). Both opponents hail from the NCAA Division III ranks.

Ursinus (1-0) loaded the bases with nobody out in the first and was ahead 2-0 after one inning. Point Park starter Kelsey Robertson lasted three innings while giving up three runs. Kristen Zelenka came on to work the last four innings and gave up one run.

Julie Campbell led a Point Park offense that never really got anything going with a 2-for-3 performance.

The Pioneers jumped on Waynesburg (1-1) for all three of its runs in the first inning of game two. Winning pitcher Abbie Heigel, a junior from DuBois, made the early lead stand up in four innings of work. Marlena Carnicella (1 IP) and Lindsey Inzana (2 IP) finished off the last three innings.

Point Park, 19-11 last year, has eight more games remaining at the Rebel Spring Games. Each of those games are versus NAIA competition beginning with matchups with Indiana Wesleyan (3 p.m.) and NAIA #14 Marian (5 p.m.) on Monday.
