Mahall (Tripp) named volunteer assistant coach
July 28, 2009
PITTSBURGH - Point Park softball head coach Michelle Coultas announced Tuesday that Katie Mahall has been named a volunteer assistant coach for the Pioneers. Mahall was a two-time All-AMC North selection at Point Park when she played under her maiden name, Katie Tripp, from 2005-08.
Mahall, whose main responsibility will be to work with the Pioneers' pitchers, is a native of Summerhill and a graduate of Forest Hills High School.
Coultas, who is in her fourth year as head coach of the Pioneers, is pleased to bring Mahall aboard.
"Katie is a great addition to our coaching staff," said Coultas, who guided the Pioneers to a 22-14 record in 2009. "She will bring her experience and knowledge to our pitchers, and she knows what it takes to do well in the AMC and the NAIA."
Mahall finished up her playing career at Point Park in 2008. As a senior, she was named first team All-AMC North after registering career-highs for wins (10), strikeouts (153), earned-run average (1.99), innings (137.1) and opponents' batting average (.188).
"I had a great experience at Point Park, and I am excited to get back into the game of softball," said Mahall. "It's a great opportunity to be an assistant coach and work with the pitchers on the team."
In 2008, she ranked in the top three in the AMC in strikeouts, ERA and opponents' average. Point Park won 17 games in 2008, which were the most victories since 2000 when the Pioneers were 22-24.
Mahall was the Pioneers' top starting pitcher for each of her last three seasons. For her career, she tallied 429 strikeouts and 225 walks in 410 innings of work. She was named honorable-mention All-AMC North as a sophomore in 2006 with 136 strikeouts in 112 innings.
Mahall earned degrees in accounting and sports, arts and entertainment management at Point Park. She is married and lives on the South Side of Pittsburgh.
