The Pioneers had opened the day with a 6-4 loss to Spring Arbor (MI), and will they will take a 3-7 record to the northern portion of their schedule that begins Tuesday at Mt. Vernon Nazarene (3 p.m.).
The win over Valley City State snapped a six-game losing skid for the Pioneers, who have struggled to score at times and are thin on experience in the pitching staff.
