Point Park softball takes two non-conference games at Waynesburg

WAYNESBURG -- Point Park University softball brought home two wins from Waynesburg University in a non-conference double header Wednesday. Point Park won game one in five innings, 9-0, and game two, 11-7.
Kate Reese (10-8) started the first game on the mound for the Pioneers (24-14, 17-7 KIAC). She held Waynesburg (9-21) to two hits over the first three innings and picked up the victory.
Senior Megan Dyer (1-2) pitched the final two innings of the game one to combine on the shutout with Reese. She allowed zero runs, hits or walks and struck out three in her first outing since an injury earlier this season.
Taylor Geary enacted the mercy rule in the top of the fifth with a three-run home run that put the score at 9-0.
Point Park scored two runs in the top of the second when freshman Shania James singled to score Karen Mao, and the other run scored off an error by the catcher.
The Pioneers tacked on four more runs in the top of the third to make the score 6-0. Alyssa McMurtrie hit a double to get on base and scored when Mao reached on an error. Beitler singled to score Mao, and senior Audrey Eisentrout hit a two-run double.
With the scored tied, 7-7, heading into the seventh in game two, the Pioneers put together a few hits to lift them to an 11-7 victory.
With the bases loaded, freshman Brittney Fisher scored when Waynesburg opted for a force out at third. Then Becca Babincak hit a two-run double, and McMurtrie singled to score another run for the 11-7 lead.
Hannah Harley (10-3) got the start in game two for the Pioneers. She allowed five runs on six hits with two walks and one strikeout in three innings.
Senior Sarah Urchek (3-1) was awarded the win on the mound and allowed two runs on five hits with one walk and three strikeouts in four innings of work.
The Pioneers staked a 3-0 lead in the top of the first on a two-run homer by Mao and an RBI double by Fisher.
Waynesburg’s Haley Payne answered in the bottom of the inning with a two-run home run, making the score 3-2.
Eisentrout hit a sacrifice fly to center to make the score 4-2, but the Yellow Jackets added three runs on four hits in the bottom of the third to take the lead, 5-4.
The back and forth continued into the sixth as the Pioneers took the lead in the top of the inning with a sacrifice fly by McMurtrie and a two-run double by Mao, making the score 7-5 in favor of Point Park.
Waynesburg tied the game in the bottom of the sixth with a two-run double by Katey Potopenko before the Pioneers took the lead in the top of the seventh.
Point Park hosts Midway College for a four-game KIAC home stand Friday, April 17 at 1 p.m. and Saturday, April 18 at noon. The Pioneers’ celebrate Senior Day on Saturday at 11:30 a.m. before the start of game one.
