KENNEDY TWP., Pa. -- The Point Park University softball team picked up a pair of walk-off wins on Sunday (April 14) in a KIAC doubleheader at Lind Field at Fairhaven Park as the Pioneers won, 12-11, on Teresa Davis' two-run single and 5-3 on Ashley Morran's three-run homer in the last at bats of Games 1 and 2, respectively.
Point Park (20-10, 13-5 KIAC) kept itself alone in second place in the KIAC with the victories and dropped Berea (14-12, 9-9 KIAC) down to fourth place. At the start of the day, Berea was two games back of the Pioneers and could've drawn even with a couple of wins.
Both games seemed to be going Berea's way until Point Park mounted big comebacks each time and eventually won both in walk-off fashion. The Pioneers overcame deficits of 6-1 and 11-6 in the opener and were down, 3-0, after five innings of the second game.
Trailing, 6-1, in the first game, Point Park battled back to tie things at 6-6 with three runs in the bottom of the fifth, an inning that was highlighted by Courtney Manovich's two-run homer. But Berea came right back with five runs in the top of the sixth to bump the lead back to 11-6. Jordyn Willoughby's three-run homer with two outs was the big blow.
Point Park cut into the lead in the sixth when Sarah Guffey's two-run double made the score 11-8. That was the same deficit the Pioneers faced in their last time at bat. But the Pioneers put together a four-run rally that included four singles and two walks. Davis' game-winning hit came with two outs to score two.
Kate Reees got the victory for Point Park after she worked a scoress top of the seventh inning to hold the score at 11-8. Kelsey Robertson pitched the first three innings, and Hannah Harley was in the circle for the next three. The win improved Reese to 8-2 on the year.
In the second game, Point Park erased the 3-0 deficit with two runs in the sixth and three in the seventh to storm back for the 5-3 win. Ashley Morran homered twice with a solo shot in the sixth to go with her walk-off, three-run shot in the seventh.
Guffey was 2 for 3 and drove in a run with a single in the sixth to trim the Berea lead to 3-2. The Pioneers were still down by that margin when they came to bat in the seventh, and that inning started with a couple of quick ground outs. Down to their last out, the Pioneers got singles from Olivia Sorce and Amanda Ardinger and Morran's homer to provide the difference.
Kristen Zelenka went the distance for Point Park in picking up the victory. She gave up three runs on six hits with six strikeouts and two walks. She had just one rough inning when she gave up four of the six hits in the fifth as Berea scored all of its runs in that frame.
Point Park continues KIAC play with a road doubleheader April 16 at Carlow. Game time is 3 p.m. at Lind Field at Farihaven Park. Carlow is 11-11 overall, 5-9 KIAC and in sixth place in the standings. Point Park beat Carlow twice in a home series last week.
