CLERMONT, Fla. -- The Point Park University softball team concluded its spring trip to Florida by winning one of two games on Friday, its last last day at the Dot Richardson National Training Center Spring Games.
The Pioneers (2-6) beat Grace (Ind.),, 16-8, with 10 runs in the eighth inning and then lost 6-0 to NAIA No. 5 St. Xavier (2-0), which was 50-9 last year.
Point Park clubbed three home runs in the win over Grace, which avenged an 8-0 loss to the Lancers earlier in the week. Ashley Morran belted a three-run homer in the first inning to get the Pioneers off to a 3-0 lead.
Natalie Zivic followed Morran's double in the fourth with a double of her own as the Pioneers stretched the lead to 4-1. Grace came back to tie the score at 6-6 and force extra innings, but Point Park's 10-run eighth included homers by freshmen Alyssa McMurtrie and Becca Babincak.
Megan Dyer was the starting pitcher for the Pioneers, and Hannah Harley got the win in four innings of relief. Kate Reese pitched a complete game in the loss to St. Xavier.
The win over Grace on Friday snapped a five-game losing streak, which was followed by Thursday's games being rained out. But the Pioneers got back in the win column before heading north.
Point Park's next games will be the KIAC openers March 14-15 at home versus Alice Lloyd (Ky.) for a four-game series.
