No. 22 Point Park opens season with two wins, Bruno gets 200th W at school

Point Park coach Mike Bruno picked up his 200th win at the school in the season opener.
DEARBORN, Mich. -- NAIA No. 22 Point Park University opened its 2013 volleyball season on Friday (Aug. 23) with a pair of victories at the University of Michigan-Dearborn Early Bird Tournament, and Pioneers head coach Mike Bruno picked up his 200th win at the school.
Point Park (2-0) beat Spring Arbor (Mich.), 3-0, and beat Lawrence Tech (Mich.), 3-1. With the pair of victories, coach Bruno is now 201-108 in this his ninth year at Point Park. He has 317 total wins in his career to rank 19th among active NAIA volleyball coaches.
The win in the season opener versus Spring Arbor came by scores of 25-21, 25-22, 25-16. The Pioneers dropped the first set to Lawrence Tech but ended up winning in four, 24-26, 25-20, 25-21, 25-17.
Senior right-side hitter Nicole Wurstle led the Pioneers with 12 kills in each match. Senior Chelsea Katkich and freshman Shiloh Simonson each totaled 10 kills versus Spring Arbor, and sophomore setter Cara Bradley handed out 35 assists.
Defensively, libero Olivia Fisher had a team-high 11 digs while Cristiane Chaves and Roxanne Grundmeier picked up points with four and three blocks, respectively.
Versus Lawrence Tech, Bradley had 29 assists and 13 digs, and Fisher came up with 24 digs. Besides Wurstle's 12 kills, Katkich totaled eight kills, and Grundmeier added six kills and six blocks in a balanced attack.
Point Park continues play at the UMD Early Bird Tournament on Saturday versus St. Xavier (IL) at 11 a.m. and versus NAIA No. 11 Madonna (Mich.) at 1 p.m.
Bruno is the all-time wins leader for Point Park volleyball. He is one of only four head coaches at Point Park in any sport to amass as many as 200 wins at the school, and he is the only one not from baseball or men's basketball. He joins former baseball coach Mark Jackson (443 wins), current men's basketball head coach Bob Rager (337 wins) and former men's basketball coach Jerry Conboy (305 wins) in that group.
