Point Park wins Clearwater Christian Tourney, reaches 20-win mark
Oct. 10, 2009
CLEARWATER, Fla. - The Point Park University volleyball team finished up a perfect weekend at the Clearwater (Fla.) Christian Tournament by defeating the host team in four sets Saturday.
Point Park (20-6 overall, 2-3 AMC) defeated Clearwater Christian, 3-1, by scores of 25-20, 25-23, 20-25, 25-17, and won the tournament championship.
The Pioneers swept Highlands Community College Saturday to complete a 5-0 weekend, but that match cannot count towards the team's record because it is versus a community college.
Point Park won its fourth tournament title of the year, and the Pioneers have been undefeated in all four events.
The Pioneers have won 20 matches for just the second time in school history. Point Park's first 20-win season came in 2007, when the Pioneers were 25-14. Point Park joins Mt. Vernon Nazarene (22-7, 4-2) and Walsh (20-2, 4-1) as the only 20-win teams in the AMC.
Rachel Roddy (Greensburg/Greensburg Salem) continued her strong play with 20 kills and eight digs Saturday. The junior right-side hitter eclipsed the 1,000-career kill milestone Friday, and she surpassed 1,000 career digs earlier this year.
Other top offensive players for the Pioneers included Lindsey Oberacker (Erie/McDowell) and Megan Lamens (New Baltimore/Berlin Bros.) who had 17 and 16 kills respectively. Oberacker, a freshman outside hitter, also had seven digs.
Katie Geary (Pittsburgh/Shaler) tallied 53 assists, eight digs and two blocks. The Point Park defense was led by Amanda Ardinger (Moon/Moon Area), who had 16 digs, and Alyssa Hall (Moon/Moon Area), who added 14 digs.
The Pioneers resume American Mideast Conference play Saturday at Mt. Vernon Nazarene. Point Park plays the host team at 11 a.m. in the first match of a tri-match. The Pioneers play non-conference opponent West Liberty State at 1 p.m.
