HOUGHTON, N.Y. -- The Point Park University volleyball team swept Houghton College, 3-0, Friday night to earn a spot in next weekend's American Mideast Conference postseason tournament.
The Pioneers, 28-9 overall, improved to 6-3 in the AMC and assured themselves a spot in the five-team playoff field. The AMC tournament will be held Nov. 12-13 on the campus of regular season champion Mt. Vernon Nazarene, which went 10-0 in conference play.
Point Park beat Houghton (12-17, 2-8 AMC) by scores of 25-21, 25-16, 25-16.
With the win, the Pioneers locked up the No. 4 seed in the AMC tournament. Point Park can finish no worse than 6-4 in the league, and it holds the head-to-head tiebreaker over the two teams next in the standings -- Cedarville (5-4 AMC) and Daemen (4-4). Both of those teams can finish no better than 6-4.
Point Park's seniors Rachel Roddy and Ashley Zietak continued their strong play Friday in leading the Pioneers to their playoff march. Roddy totaled 16 kills and six digs while Zietak had nine kills and four blocks. Zietak led all players with a .467 attacking percentage, and Roddy hit .382.
Katie Geary tallied 37 assists, nine digs and four blocks in a great, all-around performance. Libero Amanda Ardinger recorded 14 digs while defensive players Margaret Gillooly and Alyssa Hall each had seven.
The top three seeds will be Mt. Vernon Nazarene (10-0), Walsh (8-1) and Malone (8-2), three teams that beat Point Park this season.
Point Park, which is in the AMC playoffs for the fourth time in the last five years, finishes up the regular season Saturday with another road game in upstate New York. The Pioneers visit Roberts Wesleyan tomorrow at 11 a.m.
Mt. Vernon Nazarene locked up the top seed by beating Walsh, 3-2, on Thursday. Although Walsh still has another match left, the Cavaliers are assured of finishing ahead of Malone because they beat the Pioneers head to head.
The AMC tournament opens up with a matchup of the No. 4 and No. 5 teams on the evening of Nov. 12. The AMC volleyball tournament bracket will be announced by the league office early next week.
Point Park was 32-8 last year and reached the AMC tournament finals. Point Park also went to the AMC playoffs in 2006 and 2007.
