Point Park splits matches on Day 2 of Shawnee St. tourney, finishes first weekend 3-2

PORTSMOUTH, Ohio -- The Point Park University volleyball team finished the first weekend of the season with a 3-2 record after splitting two matches on the final day of the Shawnee State Tournament Saturday.
The Pioneers (3-2) started the day by cruising past winless West Virginia Tech, 3-0, by scores of 25-8, 25-19, 25-13.
Point Park went on to lose a five-setter to unbeaten Northwestern Ohio, 3-2, later in the day. The Pioneers battled back to force a fifth set after dropping the first two, but they eventually losts by a final of 25-17, 25-18, 24-26, 15-25, 15-10.
Northwestern Ohio (4-0) followed up their victory over Point Park by upsetting tournament host and NAIA No. 19 Shawnee State, 3-0. The last time Point Park and Northwestern Ohio played, it was Point Park that got a five-set win in the first round of the American Mideast Conference tournament last season.
Point Park started its season Thursday with a sweep at Rio Grande. On Friday, the Pioneers swept Lindsey Wilson, and they lost in straight sets to Shawnee State. Point Park's opens its home season Wednesday versus Westminster (7 p.m.), and the Pioneers will take a 12-match home winning streak into that contest.
In the victory over West Virginia Tech, senior captain Rachel Roddy (Greensburg/Greensburg Salem) led the way with 10 kills and seven digs.
The Pioneers had a strong performance up front. Freshman middle hitter Nicole Wurstle (Valley City, OH/Buckeye) totaled six kills and four blocks while middle hitter Ashley Zietak (Pittsburgh/Brashear) and outside hitter Lindsey Oberacker (Erie/McDowell) each chipped in five kills and three blocks.
Kyleigh Whitsel (Sheffield Lake, OH/Brookside) recorded 19 assists, and fellow setter Katie Geary (Pittsburgh/Shaler) had nine.
Oberacker turned in a season-high 16 kills to go along with three blocks in the loss to Northwestern Ohio. Of Point Park's five matches so far, that was the only one to go more than three sets.
Zietak added 10 kills and three blocks while Wurstle had five kills and seven blocks. Zoe Hughes (Butler/Knoch) tallied six kills and five blocks, and Point Park had 12 total blocks as a team.
Roddy posted seven kills and six digs, and Geary recorded 34 assists, four kills and two blocks.
Amanda Ardinger (Moon Twp./Moon Area) and Margaret Gillooly (Cranberry Twp/Seneca Valley) picked up 16 and 11 digs, respectively.
Northwestern had been an AMC member each of the last two years, but the Racers joined the NAIA Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference this year. Entering Saturday, Point Park had been 3-0 all-time versus Northwestern Ohio, which included winning the regular season meetings the last two years and the playoff match in 2009.
