Point Park extends home streak, SRU sweeps UPJ on Day 1 of Pioneer Invitational

PITTSBURGH – The Point Park University volleyball team opened its Pioneer Invitational Friday with a 3-1 victory over Seton Hill, and the Pioneers (8-3) extended their home-match winning streak to 14 consecutive matches. 

Excluding the fourth set, Point Park was able to cruise to victory over Seton Hill (0-1) by scores of 25-12, 25-10, 16-25, 25-15. Point Park had an attacking percentage of .402 in the three sets that it won and hit .000 in the third set.

Point Park has not lost at Greentree SportsPlex since Oct. 18, 2008, which was a five-set loss to perennial power Shawnee State. The Pioneers have not lost a non-conference home match since Sept. 10, 2008, a streak that includes 10 straight victories.

In the only other tournament match played Friday, Slippery Rock (1-5) swept past Pitt-Johnstown (1-2) by a score of 3-0.

Play continues Saturday at the Pioneer Invitational with four matches at Greentree SportsPlex. Point Park gets things started versus Pitt-Johnstown at 10 a.m. followed by Slippery Rock vs. Seton Hill at noon. Pitt-Johnstown plays Seton Hill at 2 p.m., and the tournament concludes with Slippery Rock at Point Park at 4 p.m.

Slippery Rock was the last non-conference opponent to win at Point Park. The Rock managed a 3-0 win on Sept. 10, 2008. Point Park won the only meeting last season.

Point Park had a trio of players reach double figures in kills in the win over Seton Hill. Sophomore outside hitter Lindsey Oberacker (Erie, Pa./McDowell) led the way with 11 kills and three blocks, and senior outside Rachel Roddy (Greensburg/Greensburg Salem) picked up 10 kills and 10 digs for her third double-double in a row.

Sophomore Kirsten Burkes (Robinson Twp., Pa./Montour) posted 10 kills to register her second double-digit kill performance in a row. The outside hitter from Robinson Twp. had a career-high 12 kills Saturday at Fairmont State.

Junior setter Katie Geary (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shaler) recorded 33 assists and eight digs. Point Park’s front row also got solid performances from Ashley Zietak (Pittsburgh, Pa./Brashear) with six kills and a block and Nicole Wurstle (Valley City, OH/Buckeye) with five kills and six blocks.

Sophomore libero Amanda Ardinger (Moon Twp./Moon Area) tallied a team-high 16 digs, and Alyssa Hall (Moon Twp./Moon Area) led the team with four services aces.

In the second match of the day, Slippery Rock ran off a long streak of points to take control of the first set. The Rock registered a side out to take an 8-7 lead, and they held serve for 12 consecutive points to take a 20-7 lead. Slippery Rock went on to win the set, 25-12. The Rock rallied to win the second set, 25-23, before closing out the match, 25-14, in set No. 3.
