Kristen Veseleny Women's Basketball Player Blog -- Entry #7
Posted on Feb. 28, 2012 (10:45 p.m.)
Unfortunately, I have to start this post off with a negative. Due to our loss against Daemon on February 18, we dropped in the national ranks to #24 (Feb. 20). I guess it’s still something to be proud of that we are ranked.
Because of our accomplishments during the year, we had the advantage of hosting the AMC Tournament. Both of our games were at home. Our first opponent in the playoffs was Houghton.
We played Houghton twice already (as I’ve mentioned in previous posts). We beat them both times. It’s tough to beat the same team three times in one season, but we came out on top again and won our first playoff game. This is another item on our goals “check list” from coach that we can cross off now.
I have been here for four years, and I never got to experience winning a playoff game in college. I can’t explain the feeling. All of the hard work we put in during preseason and the rigorous practices we’ve had makes this win so
much better. Ape was player of the game and only needs 12 more points to score 1,000 points.
Winning this game meant playing Daemen again.
On Friday, we had our weekly team dinner/bonding time. Beatty, Dunmire and Jonc had dinner at their house, but April’s mom cooked! We had BBQ chicken, mac n’ cheese, and greens. It was my first experience with greens…I was pleasantly surprised. I was told to add hot sauce to them. I expanded my food palette. We also watched the NBA Celebrity game. Thank you, Mrs. Austin!
Saturday was game day! We had a team shoot around at 1:45 at the Student Center. The energy was contagious. Everyone was pumped and ready to play. After the shoot around, some of the team went to grab lunch at the Olive Garden…no one was showing that they were nervous. I know I was but being nervous isn’t always a bad thing.
After lunch, we went to the gym. The atmosphere at the game was amazing. The stands were packed, and the fans made the game so much better. Having all of that support really means a lot to the team.
Unlike the start of this blog post, I can end it with a huge positive. THE LADY PIONEERS ARE CONFERENCE CHAMPIONS AND ARE HEADING TO SIOUX CITY, IOWA FOR THE NATIONAL TOURNAMENT! This accomplishment is a first in program history. Yet another goal on our check list to check off.
I know I always say I can’t be more proud of my team, and I am going to say it once again. This time, I also have to say how much the coaches have made a huge impact on us this year as well. Coach Grenek, Ryenn, and Em – this one’s for you guys. Without you, this wouldn’t be possible. THANK YOU.
