Joncelyn Peterkin transfers to Point Park University
Aug. 26, 2009
PITTSBURGH - Pioneers' women's basketball coach Sam Kosanovich announced Wednesday that Joncelyn Peterkin, who spent her freshman season at Carlow University last year, has transferred to Point Park University.
A 6-foot-2 center from West Mifflin, Peterkin (pictured) will be a sophomore on the Pioneers' women's basketball team this coming season.
"Joncelyn is a great addition to our program," said Kosanovich, who is in his fourth year as head coach at Point Park. "She will give us a great presence on defense and in rebounding. She also runs the full well and will contribute offensively.
"She is exactly what we are looking for in terms of a 6-2 center that can defend in the post and on the perimeter. She will match up well with centers in our conference that play inside and outside."
Peterkin played in Carlow's first 11 games last season and earned 10 starts before missing the final 15 games. She averaged 8.8 points, 8.9 rebounds and 3.1 blocks per game.
Her final game was Dec. 13 at Ursuline, and at that time she was among the American Mideast Conference leaders in rebounding and blocked shots. Peterkin did not rank in the final AMC statistical leaders, however, because she did not play in the required 50 percent of her team's games to be eligible.
Peterkin registered three double-doubles in 11 games at Carlow. She had a career-high 20 points to go with 14 rebounds and three blocks versus Penn State-Beaver. In a game versus Ursuline, Peterkin had 14 points and added career highs of 17 rebounds and six blocks.
Other big games included 10 points and 11 rebounds at Ursuline (Dec. 13) and 13 points, nine rebounds and five blocks at Notre Dame (Ohio) (Dec. 12).
Peterkin had eight points, 14 rebounds and three blocks versus Point Park Nov. 18. The Pioneers won that game, 64-54.
Peterkin was a two-time WPIAL all-section first teamer at West Mifflin High School. She was named to the McKeesport Daily News Fabulous 15 team in 2007-08, when she led the Titans to the WPIAL Class AAA title game. She averaged 10.0 points, 10.0 rebounds and 5.6 points per game as a senior.
Peterkin gives the Pioneers a total of four players who are graduates of West Mifflin. Senior guard/forward Brittney Wilson, junior guard Ashley Bergman and redshirt sophomore forward/center Terrica Jones also played for the Titans.
Point Park was 11-14 last year and has four starters returning this season.
