Pioneers fall to Ursuline, 72-68, as Henderson scores 22

WEST MIFFLIN, Pa. – Jessica Wood and Whitney Blackburn turned in big performances Friday to lead Ursuline past Point Park, 72-68, in an American Mideast Conference women’s basketball game at CCAC South Gymnasium.
Wood registered game highs of 28 points and 11 rebounds while Blackburn added 16 points to help the Arrows even their record at 9-9 overall and 3-3 in the AMC.
Ashley Henderson (Greensburg/Greensburg Central Catholic) paced Point Park with 22 points, but the Pioneers (6-9 overall, 0-6 AMC) couldn’t overcome Ursuline’s top two performers.
Blackburn entered the game leading the AMC in three-point field goals made with 63 on the year, and the senior guard opened the game by making 4 of 5 field goals including three 3-pointers.
Blackburn, who averages 16.1 points per game, scored 13 points the first 9:57. Her third trey gave Ursuline a 22-11 lead with 11:03 left in the first half.
And although Blackburn did not score another point until nailing a pair of free throws with seven seconds left in the game, Wood scored 26 of her 28 points during that span.
Terrica Jones (Pittsburgh/West Mifflin) chipped in 11 points and nine rebounds for Point Park, and her layup cut the deficit to 25-20 with 4:37 left in the first half.
Wood converted a three-point play after being fouled inside to bump the lead to 31-23 with under a minute left in the half, and the Arrows took a 31-27 lead into halftime despite committing 14 turnovers the first 20 minutes.
Wood’s jumper with 13:26 to play gave the Arrows a 42-35 lead, but Henderson made a 3-pointer to make it 42-38 and ignite an 11-2 Point Park run. The spurt included an inside bucket by Marissa Reinhard (Plum/Plum) and a 3-pointer from Heather Swedish (Sewickley/Avonworth).
Then Emily Anderson (Plum/Plum) scored a driving layup while being fouled, and the ensuing free throw gave Point Park a 46-44 lead with 9:47 left in the game.
Neither team led by more than four points the next four minutes, and Ursuline was up 56-53 with 5:30 left. Urusline then scored three straight inside baskets – the last two by Theresa Gassman – to lead by nine 62-53 with 3:27 remaining.
Henderson nailed a tough jumper to trim the margin to 64-59 at the 1:06 mark, but Ashlie Hargrove hit a 3-pointer to put Ursuline ahead by eight points the next possession.
Point Park shot 25 percent (8-for-32) the first half, and shot 34 percent (22-for-65) for the game. Point Park was 14-for-33 (42 percent) from the field the second half. The Pioneers forced 24 turnovers and led in rebounding, 45-42.
Point Park committed 20 turnovers with 13 coming in the second half. The Pioneers were 19 of 33 (58 percent) from the foul line.
Ursuline survived 24 turnovers and was 15-for-25 (60 percent) from the free-throw line.
Point Park welcomes Notre Dame (OH) Saturday in an AMC game at 2 p.m. at CCAC South Gymnasium. Notre Dame is 15-6 overall and 5-1 in the AMC.
