Point Park beats Carlow, earns second win a row

WEST MIFFLIN, Pa. – Point Park defeated Carlow, 79-61, Tuesday in an American Mideast Conference women’s basketball game at CCAC South Gymnasium to earn its second victory in a row.
Point Park (8-9 overall, 2-6 AMC) led by 15, 47-32, at halftime and cruised to victory over Carlow (0-17, 0-6). The Pioneers have defeated Carlow twice this season. Point Park defeated the Celtics, 67-57, Nov. 18 in an AMC crossover game.
Ashley Henderson (Greensburg/Greensburg Central Catholic) tallied 20 points and eight rebounds for the Pioneers. Henderson made 9 of 10 free throws, and the sophomore guard has scored at least 20 points in three of the last four games.
Henderson leads Point Park in scoring at 15.5 points per game, and she entered last night’s game as the eighth-leading scorer in the AMC. Henderson, who transferred from Pitt and Canisius, ranks first in scoring among newcomers to the conference. She has five 20-point games on the year.
Terrica Jones (Pittsburgh/West Mifflin) recorded her second straight double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds. The redshirt freshman forward has four double-doubles on the year, and Tuesday she boosted her season averages to 10.0 points and 7.3 rebounds per game.
Senior captain Ashleigh Hays (Pleasant Hills/Thomas Jefferson) chipped in 12 points and nine rebounds as Point Park led on the boards, 54-39. Heather Swedish (Sewickley/Avonworth) added 10 points, four rebounds and three assists.
Henderson hit a pair of free throws to give Point Park a 13-5 lead after 3:58, and Swedish’s 3-pointer gave the Pioneers a 19-8 lead two minutes later.
Carlow battled back to trim the lead to 22-17 on Lauren Roscoe’s trey at the 12:10 mark. Roscoe led the Celtics with 20 points and nine rebounds.
Point Park built a 46-30 lead with 55 seconds left in the half on a 3-pointer by Hays before going on to lead by 15 at the break.
Marissa Reinhard (Plum/Plum) converted a 3-point play to put the Pioneers ahead, 60-40, midway through the second half. Carlow got within 68-57 with 5:46 left after Roscoe’s 3-pointer capped an 11-2 Carlow run.
But a 3-pointer by Emily Anderson (Plum/Plum) and a layup by Henderson stretched the Point Park lead back to 16 points, 73-57 with 3:14 to play.
Point Park shot 40 percent (25-for-63) from the field and was 23-for-34 from the foul line. Carlow shot 30 percent (21-for-71) from the floor and committed 10 of its 15 turnovers in the first half.
Heidi Hollingsworth had 12 points for Carlow, and Erica Holby added 10 points, five assists, four rebounds and four steals.
Point Park travels to Malone Saturday for an AMC game at 5:30 p.m. Point Park defeated Malone, 67-57, Nov. 25 in an AMC crossover game at home. Malone (4-15, 1-7) lost to Walsh, 74-51, in an AMC game Tuesday.
