PITTSBURGH – Point Park University women’s basketball head coach Tony Grenek recently announced the signing of Shaler Area High School guard Haley Sauer, who will join the Pioneers as a freshman in the fall of 2011.
Sauer, a 5-8 guard who helped Shaler to the 2010-11 WPIAL Class-AAAA title, is the first player signed since Grenek was named Point Park’s head coach on May 5.
“We are very fortunate here at Point Park to land a player of Haley Sauer’s capabilities,” said Grenek. “She is a tremendous student and a solid player who comes from a winning program. With her athleticism and ability to penetrate and defend, I expect her to make an immediate impact in our program.”
Sauer averaged 10 points, six assists, four rebounds and two steals per game at Shaler. She also shot 70 percent from the free-throw line. A four-year varsity player and a three-year starter, Sauer led Shaler to a record of 47-6 the last two years.
Sauer maintained a 3.8 GPA throughout her high school career and plans to major in business management at Point Park.
Grenek had been the top assistant at NCAA Division II Seton Hill the last five years before taking over for Sam Kosanovich, who stepped down after five seasons to become the director of Point Park’s Student Center full time.
