Top seed Point Park beats Houghton, advances to AMC Tournament Finals Feb. 25

Top seed Point Park University defeated No. 4 seed Houghton, 71-54, on Tuesday (Feb. 21) in the AMC Tournament semifinals. The Pioneers (22-6), ranked No. 24 in NAIA Division II, advance to host No. 2 seed Daemen (23-6) in the AMC Tournament Finals Sat., Feb. 25. Game time at CCAC-South Gym is 7 p.m. Daemen, which is receiving votes nationally, beat No. 3 seed Roberts Wesleyan, 49-41, in the other semifinal on Tuesday.
Point Park lead Houghton, 20-6, after five minutes and 40-26 at the half. The Pioneers extended the lead to 20 points, 61-41, with inside 10 minutes to go.
April Austin had 13 points -- 11 in the first half -- to lead Point Park. The junior point guard needs 12 points for 1,000 in her career. Austin added four rebounds, four assists, four steals and made three treys. Kristen Beatty followed with 10 points, five assists and four rebounds.
A trio of Point Park starters had nine points each -- Joncelyn Peterkin, Kristen Veseleny and Emil Schartner. Schartner was 3 of 8 from long range. The Pioneers' early lead of 20-6 was built with four 3-pointers from the perimeter and also three inside buckets from Peterkin.
Megan Sampson led Houghton with 14 points off the bench and was the only Highlander in double figures.
Point Park forced 20 turnovers and committed 12. The Pioneers had a slight edge on the boards, 32-30 and shot 46 percent. Houghton shot 42 percent. Point Park shared the ball well with 18 assists on 26 baskets.
